Put on safety goggles before hammering the nail into the wood and mortar. Continue hammering until you drive the nail completely in and cannot hammer it further. Ideally to drill into concrete you would want to use a hammer drill but unfortunately not all of us have access to those kinds of drills. However you should be aware that nails are very hard to pound into concrete.

Drive the nail into a mortar joint not into a block which can crack.
