Dip a cloth into white vinegar and wipe the rusty area. Rinse thoroughly and let dry. Soak the cloth in white vinegar and wipe all rusted areas. Rinse and allow to dry.

The vinegar reacts with the rust and dissolves it. The rust oleum product shown recommends an oil based top coat which should not be used when repainting a metal garage door. Brush the door with soap and water starting at the bottom where the rust is concentrated. Clean the bottom panel of the garage door with warm water and a grease fighting dish washing liquid.
