A hammer may be needed if your lock is stuck step 1. Unscrew the deadbolt mounting screws from the inside of the deadbolt with a phillips screwdriver. Locate unscrew the set screw. If your doorknob has recessed screws you may need an allen wrench to remove them. Unscrew the door handles. Typically you ll have to turn the screws counter clockwise to loosen them.

Many door knobs have trim plates that cover the screws so removing them can be a bit tricky if you ve never done it before. You ll see the frame of the lock that holds the latch or dead bolt plug remaining in the hole.
